Faculty Fellows
A&L’s Faculty Fellowships are intended to enhance student support and student-facing programming and resources. In addition, they will support the research and development of pedagogical tools, faculty resources, and initiatives that foster curricular integration.
Faculty Fellows draw on their own experience, interests, and RISD’s demonstrated institutional needs to advance strategic development of A&L’s existing programs. Working under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Arts & Language, with A&L staff, with each other, with faculty, and with students, they research, develop, deliver, and assess topics, methods, and outcomes in three primary areas:
Written and Oral Communication Fellow
2026-27: Susan Solomon
A&L’s move from Academic Engagement to the Liberal Arts division this summer was prompted by a shared commitment to teaching foundational literacies—writing, reading, speaking—and to fostering curricular integration and collaboration across the college. This fellowship contributes to student- and faculty-facing initiatives that strengthen these skills in all disciplines—Liberal Arts and majors—with an underlying awareness of the rapid emergence of generative AI and the pedagogical attention it requires. Working alongside A&L’s director and in collaboration with staff and campus partners, the Written and Oral Communication Fellow will contribute to the development and delivery of student- and faculty-centered programming and support.
Multilingual Learning Fellow
2026–27: Sara Majka
RISD’s large population of multilingual students exceeds our capacity of service. Currently, three sections of Language-Intensive courses are offered in the first-year Liberal Arts program and A&L offers 1:1 tutoring. Adding a part-time faculty tutor is one in a series of recommended steps to better serving multilingual students’ learning needs. In collaboration with A&L’s director and staff, in particular the Multilingual Learning Specialist, The Multilingual Learning Fellow provides direct and indirect support to high-need multilingual students.
Publishing Fellow
2026–27: Marisa Mazria Katz
Through A&L’s student publishing program, we empower artists and designers to communicate with varied audiences, increase understanding and agency for themselves and for their disciplines, foster dialogue and civic engagement, and document campus history. Through our support for faculty publishing, we build individual and institutional capacity to articulate and disseminate the value of our contributions to research, pedagogy, and society. In collaboration with A&L’s director, the Publishing Fellow provides mentorship to three publishing communities: student publications (v.1, SCALE, desi-gned, etc.); graduate thesis writers; and faculty writers.
